The role of a school counselor is multifaceted. School counselors focus on students' career, academic, and social/emotional development. They should promote equity by providing access to all students. In addition, school counselors must design and deliver comprehensive school programs that improve a student's overall outcome and align with the school's mission (ASCA, 2023).
School Counselors can help students by:
- managing their emotions and using interpersonal skills
-assisting in the management of academic strategies to be successful
- helping students plan for postsecondary options such as military, workforce, and colleges (ASCA, 2023).
My Personal Philosophy:
I believe that all students should have the right to equal opportunity. A school counselor's role is to help students navigate any challenges they might experience in school or their daily lives. In addition, the school counselor advocates for their students on their campus. Lastly, providing a supportive and inclusive environment is paramount.
